No fewer than 13 individuals killed and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” declared the country's president.

The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the year before. This project was a hallmark of his government's economic goals for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party urged an immediate suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in full compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
