The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes
Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.
The Australian chief selector the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.
Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.
Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in Perth.
Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.
"We're aware that the window is narrowing and various factors around that, not just his injury, but additional elements," he commented.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."
Injury History
He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.
He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.
The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.
He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.
Backup Options
Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.
All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.
The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."
"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
