The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a dare for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but inside Together lies a intense examination about how we choose to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story commences when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
