TikTok Content Creators Fueling Unofficial Trade for Unapproved Weight-Loss Drug

An underground market for unlicensed slimming medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, based on new investigations.

Experimental Treatment Gaining Popularity Via Social Media

The experimental drug, which remains in research studies, is being promoted by social media influencers for its supposed fat-burning effects. Followers are urged to message these accounts privately for source information, while also receiving promotional offers.

Thriving Trade on Social Networks

Separately, a flourishing trade exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of members share “before and after” images, administration instructions and assertions of rapid British shipping. Vendors promote the substance there before redirecting customers to other platforms for transactions.

Learning About The Experimental Drug

Retatrutide is an experimental injection developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Early trials suggest it could help individuals lose up to 25% of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted digitally as the next Ozempic.

Healthcare Experts Express Worries

However, physicians and chemists have warned that the distribution of what remains an unapproved medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to individuals administering substances of uncertain source.

Several professionals stated the demand for retatrutide could be connected to the rising cost of licensed weight loss products such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Enforcement

Selling the unapproved drug on social media or Telegram is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed drug that cannot be marketed or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Several content creators attempt to sidestep the regulations by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted substance, but promotion and supply can still breach medicines, marketing, and consumer laws, risking penalties, legal action or prison.

Service Response and Material Elimination

According to the social media company, the service has taken down problematic content and banned associated hashtags and search suggestions. The company said it was committed to keeping the platform secure and investing in strengthening compliance measures.

Online Trading Activities

Research also found communities with up to 9,000 participants selling retatrutide using Telegram's built-in search feature, which operates like a online catalog. Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays groups with numerous of members, filled with images of weight loss, glowing testimonials and detailed instructions for mixing or administering at residence.

Within moments of joining one group, a vendor shared WhatsApp details, where most purchases occur. The vendor sent an instruction manual and guaranteed shipping within two days. When questioned whether the substance was genuine, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a alleged laboratory certificate. None asked about body mass, health issues or past usage.

Product Information and Costs

Within these communities, messages display dark colored parcels with postal service labels, stating to include fresh supplies. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can select between powder vials, prepared at home with sterile water, or pre-filled pens usually sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When questioned how much time a pen should be used, vendors give contradictory answers ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Safety Actions

A spokesperson for the messaging service said it regularly monitored dangerous material on its platform including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Cautions

“People are administering materials they can’t verify. Although the science behind retatrutide is valid, these online products may not contain what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

A medical professional of an online medical service connected the increase in demand to current price rises for approved slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, individuals are using online platforms. But fake treatments are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was clean,” she said.

Her staff has previously seen patients harmed by personal administration from unconfirmed suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your well-being,” said the doctor. “These materials could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

Producer Statement

A representative from the pharmaceutical company stated the substance was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this time no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any item “falsely representing itself as a company investigational product not yet approved … may subject users to possibly serious health risks”.
